We are a small three teacher school situated in a beautiful rural location, three miles from Ballyconnell, Co. Cavan. We pride ourselves on our welcoming and caring school atmosphere and the excellent standard of education we provide for our pupils. We are extremely proud of our school and love to celebrate the achievements of our wonderful pupils. We hope that our website will give you an insight into the life of Greaghrahan National School.

Confirmation

Congratulations to Éabha, Finn, Lily, Sarah and Teagan who were confirmed by Bishop Martin Hayes in a lovely ceremony in St. Mary's Church, Staghall on Saturday, 25th May. Greaghrahan NS and Milltown NS came together for this special occasion for both schools and the parish community. The pupils participated in the liturgy with beautiful singing and readings. We hope you all had a wonderful day of celebration with your families.

Music on Wheels

What an amazing afternoon we had when the “Music on Wheels Tour” came to our school to celebrate our partnership with Music Generation. The pupils sang, played music and joined in with the fantastic live band. It was a brilliant opportunity for the pupils to showcase what they have learned during the year to family and the school community. Thank you to music educators Aishling and Gary for their work with the pupils and to Music Generation Cavan and Monaghan for giving us this amazing experience.

Caterpillars to Butterflies

Over the past few weeks we have watched our caterpillars grow bigger and bigger. When they had eaten their fill, they formed their cocoon. After two weeks we watched excitedly as they began to emerge as butterflies. We put flowers and fruit into the habitat to feed them. We enjoyed learning about butterflies and their life cycle. After a couple of days we said goodbye to our butterflies and released them in the school garden!

Cumann na mBunscol Competitions

The girls and boys participated in the annual Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic competition recently. They gave it their best and represented their school proudly. Despite playing well, unfortunately they did not reach the final. However, they all enjoyed the occasion and had a great day out. Well done girls and boys!

Community Games Winners

Congratulations to our wonderful pupils who were winners in the Annagh/Drumlane Art and Handwriting competitions recently. We are very proud of their achievements and we wish them the best of luck in the County final.

National Bike Week 2024

Bike Week, an annual celebration promoting the joys of cycling was held from 11th to the 19th May, with events and activities held around the country.

Paired Reading

We love getting together with our friends in the other classrooms for some paired reading. It helps us to improve our reading skills and we enjoy discussing the pictures and story together. We also appreciate the help that parent volunteer Lisa gives us when she comes into our classroom every week.

SEAI Energy Workshop

Thanks to Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) Workshop facilitator Eimear who visited the school recently. The energy workshop was very interactive and engaging for the pupils, involving lots of games and experiments.

Outreach Armagh Planetarium

We were delighted to have Armagh Observatory and Planetarium visit Greaghrahan N.S. visit our school to give pupils an immersive stellar experience in their outreach dome. Helen and Ria guided the pupils with their fun, interactive virtual presentation as they explored the planets of the Solar System and journeyed through the night sky. It was an amazing experience which was much enjoyed by all. Thank you to Science Foundation Ireland and all at Armagh Observatory and Planetarium for giving us this unique opportunity.

Dogs Trust Ireland

Thanks to Education and Community Officer Paul Cleary from Dogs Trust Ireland who visited the school recently to deliver a very engaging presentation for the pupils about remaining safe around dogs they don’t know. We also learned about the responsibilities that come with owning a dog.
