On Monday morning, the boys and girls took part in a Santa Dash on the school grounds. They wore their Christmas jumpers, hairbands and Santa hat for the occasion. Everyone was in good spirits and didn't let the weather dampen the mood. Thanks to Mrs. Mc Guigan and SNA Karen for organising the event. We were all treated to chocolate brussel sprouts to reward our efforts. Check out the pictures below.

Christmas Jumper Day

Christmas is a time for giving and on Monday, the staff and children wore their Christmas Jumpers to school  to raise money for those in greater need than themselves. This year the charity chosen was Temple Street Children's Hospital where Junior Infant pupil Kohen Fitzpatrick receives his treatment. Everyone looked lovely and festive in their jumpers. We raised €550 for Ireland's sickest children. A big thank you to all our families for their generous donations.

Congratulations to Éabha, Eve, Finn, Keira, Lily and Sarah who received their First Holy Communion in St. Mary's Church Staghall on Saturday 19th December. The children had waited a long time for their special day. It was a lovely intimate ceremony for them and their families in the surroundings of the church beautifully decorated in preparation for Christmas. The children participated wonderfully in the Mass making everyone proud. The following day we all celebrated the special occasion at school with cake for everyone.

Sponsored Silence for Local Homeless Charity

15/12/2020

The Senior Room held a very successful "Sponsored Silence" before Christmas when they raised €501 for the charity "Sleep Out Cavan." The charity supports people around Cavan who are homeless and they also provide clothing and supplies to people who are living rough on the streets of Dublin. The pupils had activities prepared to occupy them and to distract them from talking. Well done boys and girls for taking the initiative and thanks to your teacher Mrs. Gunn for helping to organise the fundraiser.

We have been awarded our Active School Flag!

We were thrilled this week when we learned that we have been awarded the Active School Flag. A huge amount of work has been put into the achievement of the Active flag by everyone; pupils and staff, the ASF committee and parent volunteers. Thank you to our families who continued so much of the work during the lockdown by participating in the weekly activities and challenges set by the teachers. The judges were extremely impressed with the effort put into the achievement of the flag and commented that "the ASF website showcase section in your school website is really outstanding." A very special word of thanks to Mrs. Mc Guigan and Ms. Fitzpatrick who led the process and dedicated a lot of time and energy to it. We are hugely proud of this achievement.

Aistear - The Post Office

13/12/2020

The weeks before Christmas are very busy in the Post Office and the Junior Room post office was no different. There were Christmas cards to be written and parcels to be posted. TV licences were purchased and passports were applied for. Dog licences were in very big demand. At the construction area, the children were creating a new delivery van. In the Small World area the post was delivered to all the houses around the town. Presents were carefully wrapped and had ribbons and bows added. With all the effort put in by our postal workers, we're sure they'll all arrive in time for Christmas!

Grand Designs

As part of their Geography topic on "Homes and Other Buildings" this term, the fourth, fifth and sixth classs children designed and made their ideal home or "Grand Design". As you will see from the pictures below, the resulting homes show considerable creativity and ingenuity and the children and their families are to be commended on the time, effort, skill and attention to detail that went into each of the projects.  Well done all on your outstanding designs!
The cross-curricular work on this topic has heightened the children's awareness of the issue of homelessness in the community. As a result, the class have decided to participate in a one hour "Sponsored Silence" at school on Friday 11th December. Money raised from the event will be donated to the homeless charity 'Sleep Out Cavan'.

Friday at the Café

We finished our Aistear theme "The Café" with a visit to Auntie Liz's Café where we got busy in the kitchen. First we made jelly by following instructions and we put it in the fridge to set. Then we made some funny face biscuits like Ella and Evan. We used lots of sweets for the eyes, nose and ears. The best part was when we got to eat the jelly and the biscuits. They were really yummy!!

Despite the restrictions, it was business as usual in the Aistear Café, where our young chefs and waiting staff have been kept busy with a constant stream of hungry customers. There were lots of tasty offerings on the menu to suit every taste. The washing up staff wasted no time in keeping the plates and cutlery spick and span. At the play dough station we made our own playdough and turned this into some lovely cookies. We made furniture for the café at the construction area. It's been a busy week!

Build a Geodesic Dome

The Senior Room enjoyed two MakerMeet STEAM Workshops which were live streamed into thir classroom. Chris from MakerMeet worked with the teacher to assist the children to build a paper circuit and a Geodesic dome. The children really enjoyed the opportunity to experiment and learn. Thanks to Cavan Monaghan Science Festival 2020 and Johnston County Library for providing us with this wonderful opportunity.

Make a Paper Circuit

Paper Tower Challenge

There were great feats of engineering taking place in First, Second and Third Class when Chris from MakerMeet worked with the teacher and children to build a paper tower which would hold 100g of rice. The workshop explored friction, weight distribution, balance, equilibrium, Newton’s Laws of Motion, and fundamental concepts of engineering.

Dancing Raisins

Science Week in the Junior Room
We linked Science Week to our Aistear Theme "The Café". We made our own play dough and then used it to make cookies for the hungry customers. We also did a Magic Milk experiment. It was so cool to watch the colours mixing!

AgriKids Be Farm Safe

On Tuesday the Junior Room enjoyed a Zoom call from Alma Jordan the founder of AgriKids. Alma read one of her stories and pointed out many of the dangers on the farm to the children. We learned that we should never visit a farm without an adult and that animals and farm machinery can be dangerous.

Junior Einstein's Science Club

We learned how scientists solve crimes with the Junior Einsteins Science Club. We set up a crime scene and played a scientist detective to find out who the culprit was! Using fingerprinting, black lights, tooth marks, moulding and shoe rubbings we had great fun in this exciting and informative session.

The long anticipated day had arrived! We were going on our Scavenger Hunt to look at the signs of Autumn. We found all kinds of fallen leaves; oak, ash, beech and sycamore. They were in all kinds of beautiful colours: red, orange, yellow and brown. We looked for acorns under the oak tree and listened to the birds singing high up in the trees. We had lots of fun learning outdoors with our friends.

We have been very busy over the past few weeks in our farm shop. There was plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables to sort and buy. We were offering very competitive prices and everyone was encouraged to SHOP LOCAL!!!
We designed new sheds for the animals in Junk Art and some of us added tractors, gardens and even a windmill. In Small World we sorted animals and found homes for them around the farm. We explored the bales of hay, tractors and other machinery. We developed our fine motor skills by using plasticine to model tails, ears, horns for the animals. Some of us designed our own animals.
