Homework
Homework fosters independence, self-reliance, responsibility and lifelong learning. In general, homework should be achievable by a child working on their own to the best of their ability. It is normally prepared by the teacher in class. It can be used to practise what is done in school or can be designed to challenge children’s ability and provide opportunities for creativity. |
Textbooks
Following discussion, school textbooks shall be selected by the staff to meet the needs of the pupils.
A school book rental scheme is operated within the school from 2nd to 6th class to facilitate parents in the provision of school textbooks. Through this scheme all necessary textbooks will be provided by the school for an annual rental charge. Workbooks or any other books which are written into cannot be passed on to another pupil, therefore these must be purchased outright. The rental charge will also include a fee for photocopying and the supply of art and craft materials. Parents will be informed of the rental fee annually.

Special Educational Needs
The SEN service is designed to help pupils attain maximum educational achievement while in our school. Pupils will be selected for supplementary teaching in accordance with DES guidelines which are outlined in our SEN policy. This selection process will follow administration, scoring and interpretation of standardised screening tests. Emphasis will be placed on early intervention and prevention programmes. Pupils will be monitored and have their learning targets reviewed on an on-going basis. The results of these will be communicated to parents regularly. Diagnostic assessments may be carried out on pupils who have been identified as experiencing low achievement or learning difficulties and referral to outside agencies may be made.

Leaving School Early
When it is necessary for a pupil to leave school early, a note must be sent to the class teacher. Parents/guardians are required to sign out the child. Any person collecting a child on behalf of the parent will only be permitted to take the child if the parent has contacted the school beforehand. Please accept that it is only in the interest of the safety of your child that these procedures are in force. |
Administration of Medicines:
If a child has any specific medical needs, it is vital that the class teacher and the school authorities are notified on enrolment. Medicines shall only be administered in school when essential. Medicines will not be stored or administered in school by staff, without the prior written permission of the child’s parents and the authorisation of the B.O.M. |
Healthy Lunch Policy
The school operates a Healthy Lunch Policy. Pupils are expected to bring a lunch generally accepted as “healthy” i.e. sandwiches, fruit, yoghurts and healthy drinks. Sweets, bars, biscuits, crisps, fizzy drinks, etc., are not allowed. In the interest of pupils’ health and in fairness to other pupils, all parents are expected to abide by the policy. In consultation with the parents, the staff will review and amend the policy from time to time. |
Code of Behaviour
Greaghrahan National School places great importance on pupils being encouraged to develop good patterns of behaviour. In order to create an environment in which effective learning can occur, certain rules, which are clearly understood and implemented are required. School rules are kept to a minimum and are devised with regard for the health, safety and welfare of all members of the school community. Positive reinforcement of good behaviour leads to better self-discipline and we place a greater emphasis on rewards and incentives than on sanctions.
Bullying
Bullying in any form, verbal or physical is totally unacceptable and runs contrary to the stated aims of respect, courtesy and consideration. An Anti-Bullying Policy drawn up by the staff in collaboration with parents and approved by the Board of Management operates in the school. A copy of this policy is available on request.
It is essential that anyone, staff member, pupil or parent who suspects that bullying is occurring informs the school authorities immediately. All reports and information received will be acted on with discretion and sensitivity. At all times staff foster a positive atmosphere of inclusiveness and integration to ensure that all children develop a positive attitude towards each other.
