Raising the Junior Entrepreneur Flag
Here we are raising our flag. We all enjoyed the Junior Entrepreneur Programme and learned a lot from the experience. We are very proud of our achievement.
JEP School Showcase Day
On the 18th of May we got to travel to the Hotel Kilmore for School Showcase Day. Here we met pupils from other schools in Cavan who were involved in the JEP. The organisers of the JEP were there as well as the local radio station Northern Sound. Liam and Clara from the sales team were interviewed by Eddie Butler from "The Bottom Line" about the business. You can listen to the interview at http://www.northernsound.ie/report-from-the-junior-entrepreneur-programme-awards-ceremony-for-2016/ It was really interesting to look at all the different projects. We got to showcase our plant growing project and answer questions about it. We were very proud when we were awarded the Junior Entrepreneur Award.
Selling our Baskets!
We sold our hanging baskets after Sunday Mass at Staghall Church. The lovely posters designed by the Marketing Team, together with the plants, created a very colourful display which attracted a lot of attention. It wasn't long before there wasn't a basket left. However, our quick thinking, entrepreneurial Sales Team seized the opportunity to take orders for more baskets. These were brought back to the school and everyone got busy potting again! The Finance Team counted up the takings and everyone agreed that it had been a very successful day.
In Full Bloom
Our flowers are in full bloom and bursting with colour. Its time to get the baskets potted up and ready for sale!
Our Project is in the "Irish Times"!
On March 22nd, our project made the national news when it was featured in an article about the Junior Entrepreneur programme in the Irish Times newspaper. Here is the picture of Liam and below also taken from the article, are Clara's views on the JEP programme. The full article can be viewed at http://www.irishtimes.com/news/education/a-lesson-for-life-you-re-never-too-young-to-start-a-business-1.2574009
GREAGHRAHAN NATIONAL SCHOOL, CO CAVAN Hanging baskets Clara Kiernan found the experience really rewarding. “Everyone in the class will invest €5-€10 and we hope to make a profit. We’ve learned a lot, especially about entrepreneurs. I never really knew that loads of people around the area have their own business. I never really thought of it that way. We’ve learned how to manage money and organise things. I would like to be an entrepreneur when I’m older, because it’s very enjoyable,” she says. We are delighted to see that Liam and Clara are also currently featured on the homepage of The JEP website at http://www.juniorentrepreneur.ie/ |
Jerry Kennelly visits the School
We were honoured to have the founder of the Junior Entrepreneur programme, Jerry Kennelly visit the school to see how our project was coming on. He told us about his business and how he set up the programme. He interviewed the teachers and some of the pupils to get their views on the Junior Entrepreneur programme.
The Finance Team making sure the figures add up!
Making Progress!
Our hard-working Production Team are doing a great job and we’ll soon have flowers for transplanting into baskets.
The Story-Telling Team
Planting the Seeds
The production team planted the seeds. Plants were chosen that would give good colour and that would be suitable for planting in hanging baskets. We planted petunias, marigolds, snapdragons and pansies. We planted them in separate trays and checked them everyday to make sure they didn't dry out.
Market Research
We conducted market research among our parents, relatives and friends to gather information about what influences customers when they are buying hanging baskets. Here are the results of our market research.
Project Teams
Our business needed a Production Team, a Finance Team, a Marketing Team, a Storytelling Team and a Sales Team.
We decided that we would apply for our choice of job for our business. We had to write a letter to our teacher saying why we should get this job. We had to tell them about our skills and why we would be suitable for the job. After reading all the applications the teachers decided which jobs we were getting. Now that we knew our jobs, it was time to get to work!

Meeting the Dragons
We split the class into groups of 4/5 and discussed our ideas. Each group then chose their best idea and made a presentation to show to the dragons. We had been told they would choose the best and most profitable idea, so we took this into account when we prepared our presentations, researching our ideas thoroughly.
Our Dragons were Brian Kennedy, Eileen Doyle and Caroline Burns.
All four groups presented their ideas to the Dragons. The ideas were Drumlane merchandise, Activity Book, Chickens and Hanging baskets.
The Dragons picked The Hanging Baskets idea because they thought that it would be more profitable than the other ideas, it would cost less, and there would be less risks involved.

Getting Started
Mr. Duggan and Mrs. O' Neill Chambers introduced the Junior Entrepreneur Programme to the pupils in the Senior Room.
They explained how that we would have to work together to set up a business. They taught us about entrepreneurs and enterprise and this gave us a better understanding of the programme. They also told us about the many entrepreneurs in the local area. Until then we were unaware that these people were entrepreneurs.
Sean Brady a local Entrepreneur paid a visit to our school. He talked about the process he went through to set up his own engineering business. We then had the opportunity to ask him some questions about being an entrepreneur. We learned a lot about running a business and Sean told us that it is not always easy.
