As part of working towards renewing our Active School Flag, the children are taking part in the Run Around Ireland Challenge. Each lap = 1km and each class worked out the distance from our school here in Cavan to different landmarks on the maps and wrote the distance on the sheet provided. This was an excellent way for children to learn about some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks. It was also a good maths project estimating and calculating the distance from our school to the landmarks. Over the next 4 weeks, our aim is to run to some of these places without leaving our schoolyard. A great way to develop our Physical Well-being.

When we heard the bells ringing through the corridor it meant time for 'Drop Everything and Dance.' We all gathered as a class and followed the routine to 'Can't stop the feeling'. The children enjoyed some physical activity and having a dance with their friends.
What a lovely relaxing start to our Monday after mid term. The children were delighted to welcome Sharon Brennan in to teach them some Yoga. Yoga is a series of movements connected to breathing. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s non-competitive. Yoga enhances flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. Practising yoga helps children to relax, slow down and improves concentration and focus. Yoga teaches children self-care and relaxation techniques to help them to deal with little challenges that may arise in their lives. Well-being Week takes place from Monday 20th - Friday 24th February and the Amber School Flag Committee has kindly asked for the Active School Committee to organise Physical activities to promote the physical well-being of the pupils and staff. "Keeping active helps protect your physical and mental health. Physical activity will help you sleep, relax and feel better. Physical activity helps reduce stress and boosts your energy levels. It can also be a good way to meet people and get more involved in your community. Physical activity can help improve your mood." https://www2.hse.ie/mental-health/self-help/activities/physical-activity/ Active School Presentation at School AssemblyThe Active School Committee members gave a presentation at our Whole School Assembly. They spoke about the ASC's plan for the rest of the school year and the goals we want to achieve. The children had great fun for their Christmas Active Schools where they carried out a range of fun physical activities called the 12 Days of Fitness. December 2022 All classes in Greaghrahan N.S. have been completing the Daily Mile.
"The Daily Mile is simple and free and gets children out of the classroom for fifteen minutes every day to run or jog, at their own pace, with their classmates, making them fitter, healthier, and more able to concentrate in the classroom." thedailymile.ie If the weather is against us we always have a Go Noodle or Bizzy Break, making sure the children get their exercise in at regular intervals throughout the school day. November-December 2022 All pupils in the school have completed a six-week block of basketball coaching. The children thoroughly enjoyed their weekly sessions and made great progress over the period. We are grateful to the dedicated basketball coach, Brian who shared his skills and passion for the sport with the pupils. Míle buíochas Brian for providing the pupils in Greaghrahan N.S. with this wonderful opportunity. September-October 2022 Nadia Williams, Education Development Officer with Water Safety Ireland delivered an in-class presentation to all pupils in the school recently. The pupils also received hands-on practice in non-contact rescue and ring buoy throws following the presentation. Thank you Nadia for an excellent presentation. November 2022 #FeelGoodFridays – Active HALLOWEEN ASF encourages primary and post primary schools to GET ACTIVE this HALLOWEEN. In order to promote this the children had great fun playing a range of Halloween games and creating some very cool zombie dances during our outdoor Halloween Disco. Of course, Thriller was the most requested. What a great way to blow off the cobwebs!! October 2022 The Junior and Middle rooms traveled to Florencecourt to experience what life was like in the kitchen and garden of the house at harvest time. The children had the opportunity to explore the orchard and magnificent Walled Garden to see all the apple trees and work out the clues in the treasure hunt. A visit to the beautiful Rose Cottage which was once the home of the Head Gardener on the estate came next. Finally, the children and teachers had to carry some heavy baskets of fruit and vegetables back to the house. It was hard work but we had a really fun time.
