The Active School Committee conducted a survey of the whole school to find out what clubs the children of Greaghrahan N. S. are members of. It was lovely to see such a variety of clubs mentioned, especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. As you can see, Gaelic was the most popular.

In Greaghrahan N. S. we have had Musical Mondays since we began our Active School Flag Journey back in 2018. The music has been such a hit that the Active School Committee has decided that we should introduce an extra 2 days of music in the yard- Wonderful Wednesdays and Feel Good Fridays! Having music outside instantly lifts everybody's mood-children and staff alike. We have enjoyed learning how to do the Macarena!
A big thank you to our colleague Karen who offered to run an after-school workshop. Karen has 20 years experience in playing football and coaching u12 and u14 with her local club. She has her fundamentals Coaching cert and Level 1 GAA coaching cert. She was the perfect person to share her knowledge and expertise. Her personal knowledge coupled with the PSSI Games lesson plans really helped us to improve our teaching skills. We were eager to improve our football skills as the boys and girls entered the Cumann na mBunscol Gaelic football tournament so we have a lot of practicing to do!
March 2023 Thank you to the TY students from St Mogues College in Bawnboy who visited the school as part of the Irish initiative to teach the Senior Room Students some Irish Dancing. The students really enjoyed the session. April 2023 The Active School Committee had great fun organising and managing an Easter Egg Hunt for the whole school. Thank you to the senior committee members who helped to think up challenging clues for everybody. each class got the opportunity to complete the hunt separately. It was lovely to see the excellent teamwork to find all of the hidden eggs. Well done everybody! March 2023 Our Green School Committee, together with the Active School Committee organised a Walk for Water to celebrate World Water Day. We did this to raise awareness about women and children in countries around the world, who walk on average 6km a day to access water, and have to carry heavy loads of up to 20 Litres on their way back. Often the water they find is dirty and not fit for human consumption. Our Walk for Water made us realise how lucky we are to have safe drinking water and sanitation. We also got to observe the signs of Spring in the beautiful countryside surrounding our school. March 2023 The Active School committee set up a range of stations and the children participated in some physical activities which can help their physical well-being. As part of working towards renewing our Active School Flag, the children are taking part in the Run Around Ireland Challenge. Each lap = 1km and each class worked out the distance from our school here in Cavan to different landmarks on the maps and wrote the distance on the sheet provided. This was an excellent way for children to learn about some of Ireland’s most famous landmarks. It was also a good maths project estimating and calculating the distance from our school to the landmarks. Over the next 4 weeks, our aim is to run to some of these places without leaving our schoolyard. A great way to develop our Physical Well-being.
When we heard the bells ringing through the corridor it meant time for 'Drop Everything and Dance.' We all gathered as a class and followed the routine to 'Can't stop the feeling'. The children enjoyed some physical activity and having a dance with their friends.
What a lovely relaxing start to our Monday after mid term. The children were delighted to welcome Sharon Brennan in to teach them some Yoga. Yoga is a series of movements connected to breathing. Yoga at an early age encourages self-esteem and body awareness with a physical activity that’s non-competitive. Yoga enhances flexibility, strength, coordination, and body awareness. Practising yoga helps children to relax, slow down and improves concentration and focus. Yoga teaches children self-care and relaxation techniques to help them to deal with little challenges that may arise in their lives. |
