Goodbye and Thank you!!

It was a sad day when we had to say goodbye to two much loved teachers, Mrs. Burns and Mrs. O' Neill Chambers who have been with us for many years. We thank them for their hard work and commitment to the school and wish them well in their new teaching positions. We will all miss you!
We also said goodbye and thank you to Mrs. Connolly who has been an SNA in our school for the past year. Mrs. Connolly has been a great asset to the school, and has been involved in all school activities. We will miss her impromptu poetry writing and her willingness to help out.
Finally, we also bade farewell to our cleaner and caretaker Eddie Fitzpatrick and his wife Anna. Eddie has kept the school spick and span for the past four years. We thank him for all  his hard work and wish him well in his retirement.

Exploring the Natural Environment

We are fortunate to be based in a rural location, with immediate access to a rich learning resource, where pupils can observe and appreciate the beauty and wonder of the natural environment. The pupils had many opportunities to get outdoors this term and to explore the natural features of their surroundings.
The highlight of these outings was a field trip to Cuilcagh Mountain Park, where pupils followed the Legnabrocky Trail to the top of Cuilcagh, 665 metres above sea level. There, they enjoyed a well earned picnic, while taking in the breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. The picture below shows the enthusiastic climbers near the summit, with Lough Atona behind, which lies at the foot of the mountain, having been carved out by glacial activity during the last Ice Age, 13,000 years ago.

The annual Jumble Sale was organised by fifth and sixth class. There were many bargains to be had and whether you were into books or cars, dolls or sweets, there was something to suit all tastes. All stalls did a brisk trade and there were novelty games and beauty treatments to keep the young customers happy. The proceeds are being used to purchase school resources.

Teddy Bear's Picnic

Picture
The Junior Room and their bears enjoyed some tasty treats at the Teddy Bear's Picnic. Mrs. Connolly penned this lovely poem for the occasion.

The day finally arrived
For the teddies to come to school
Ben wore a bow tie
And was looking rather cool

Furrball had no problems
With the journey in the car
Because he and Leo Lion
Were used to travelling far

Elmo had his homework done
Because he's a clever guy
Brownie stayed so quiet
Some bears are just so shy!

Charlie bear was so cheeky
And went running everywhere
Spotty bear kept him in line
Because he's a Garda bear.
Rainbow Ginger sprang in
And made the classroom all aglow
Bunny made an entrance
She is handmade, don't you know.

Greeny is a lucky bear
Covered in lucky charms
Heee-hee is so loved
Always in loving arms.

Roxy is so glamorous
Her necklace made from pearl
Snuggles likes to snuggle
And is a little Galway girl.

All bears are getting ready
For the picnic here today
The sun is coming out
A perfect picnic day.

Our annual Sports Fun Day took place on Friday 16th June.  The children participated in a wide variety of co-operative games and novelty races before moving on to the traditional races such as the egg and spoon race and the sack race.  A very enjoyable day was had by all! Many thanks to our Parents Association was providing treats for all the children.

Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of all that's great about bikes and cycling.
As part of Bike Week and in conjunction with Cavan Sports Partnership, the children in 5th and 6th class travelled to the Cavan Canoe Centre Butlersbridge to try out mountain biking. They learned all about the importance of bicycle safety before taking to the track to practise their skills! All the children had a "wheelie" good time!!

On Friday 2nd June the Junior room went on their tour to Killinkere Visitor and farm. We were fortunate to have a beautiful day where the children were able to fully enjoy all the activities the farm  has to offer. They went on a nature trail where they met animals large and small. They enjoyed a trailer ride with the farmer, with a stop off to hear the story of "the Billy Goats Gruff". Then it was back to the farm to meet and feed some more residents. The pony rides were a memorable experience for the children. There was even time to play in the playground and the large sand area. Finally, they got to meet and learn about the pets on the farm, before leaving for home with a stop off at Mc Donalds in Cavan. It was a fun filled and action packed day enjoyed by the children and adults alike!

The children from 2nd-6th class made a splash when they travelled to Funtasia Waterpark Drogheda on Friday 2nd June for an action packed day.  On arrival the children were split into teams and did bowling which was great fun.  Following this they enjoyed a hot meal before making their way to the waterpark. The children had a fantastic time on the feature slides, the Super Bowl and the Boomerang. “The Super Bowl” speed slide lives up to its name with a thrilling ride and spins like you’ve never seen before. The ultimate water rush!
“The Boomerang” features an incredible gravity defying drop. This double rider speed slide drops you 60ft then boomerangs you to the steep incline wall for another turn around and slide to the bottom. It was a firm favourite with all the children!
To finish off the day the children entered the "Haunted House" which for some was a spooky experience they would rather forget!!
