The pupils and staff from Newtowngore and Greaghrahan have just completed a very successful STEAM based learning project together in Greaghrahan N.S. The activities were organised collaboratively by the staff from both schools. Work stations were set up to provide hands-on exploratory activities for the pupils. The pupils explored the theme of Autumn and Halloween by rotating around Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics work stations throughout the day.  There was a great buzz around the school on the jam-packed shared learning days. Everyone agreed that it was most enjoyable and great to finally be able to meet up again. Check out the pictures below to see what the children got up to each week.

The school was invaded by a multitude of fearsome creatures on Friday as the children arrived in a fantastic array of costumes to begin the Halloween festivities. There was a great variety of witches, vampires, skeletons,  ghosts on display and it was especially nice to see some creative home-made costumes this year.  Well done to the boys and girls and their parents for all the effort put in. The theme of this year’s programme is STEAM education. STEAM is an educational approach that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to foster an interest and love of the arts and sciences in children from an early age.

The pupils from Third to Sixth Class have been travelling to Newtowngore N.S. to learn about virtual reality and coding. Pupils have be provided with materials to encourage exploration, curiosity, creativity and problem solving.

Virtual Reality

Picture
Virtual Reality is a computer technology with scenes and objects that appear to be real, making the user feel they are immersed in their surroundings. The project included a visit from a Virtual Reality facilitator who provided the pupils with a new and innovative learning experience using software Virtual Reality goggles which were worn by the pupils. The pupils had the chance to experience famous cities and natural features of other countries. They  visited football stadiums and haunted houses and imagined that they were on a Roller coaster.

Micro:bit

A micro:bit is a piece of technology that can be programmed to do different things; it can be a digital watch, a fitness tracker or a games console. Using micro:bits encourages children to learn basic coding and programming, important skills in today’s tech savvy world. During the programme, teachers and pupils received training from a facilitator and pupils will successfully write a code and programme micro:bits. The children have had lots of fun learning about coding.

There was great excitement in the Senior Room when the children celebrated their reward for filling their marble jar with a Pizza Party. The students have been working very hard on procedural writing and wrote out the steps on how to make a pizza. We followed the procedures and made our very own pizza. The children welcomed the Junior and Middle room in to sample some of their pizza and everyone agreed they tasted delicious!

It was a beautiful sunny morning when the Junior room went for their annual nature walk to look at the signs of autumn. We had lots of keen observers who were able to identify the nuts we found along the way.  We noticed the different colours of the autumn leaves and listened to the birds singing in the trees.  We collected some leaves and nuts for our investigation table. Later we did some recount writing to record our walk.
