Senior Pupils Present Cheque to Cavan Charity

Michael Loughnane, founder of "Sleep out Cavan" visited the school this week to talk to the children about the work he is involved in. He explained how he started the charity in 2014 to provide clothing for homeless people he met in Dublin. The charity now also supports people around Cavan who are homeless. The gardaí, hospitals and social workers all contact "Sleep out Cavan" when they require clothing or supplies for people in need. The children of the Senior Room presented John with a cheque for €501 which they raised in a "Sponsored Silence" before Christmas. John thanked the children for their donation. The charity relies on members of the public to donate clothes and fundraise on their behalf. "Sleep Out Cavan" is based on the grounds of the old St. Patrick's College in Cavan town. All donations of clothing and footwear are gratefully received.

We ended Active Sport's Week on a high when we raised our Active School Flag on Friday afternoon. This was a great achievement for our school and we are very proud of our success. We are grateful to Drumlane man Ryan Connolly and Benjamin Kelly from Templeport, both players from the Cavan team who came to raise the flag. Mrs. Mc Guigan spoke about how hard the committee and children worked over the past two years to achieve the flag. Mrs. Mc Guigan and Ms. Fitzpatrick were thanked for their hard work in coordinating the programme. We intend to keep up the good work to maintain the flag. To celebrate the occasion the ice-cream van came to the school and we all enjoyed some delicious treats.

On Thursday we were introduced to Orienteering by Philip and his daughter Aoife. Orienteering is an exciting outdoor adventure sport similar to a cross country race. It helps us to work as a team and to build our social skills. We had to map read and problem solve in order to complete the puzzles. It was important to listen and communicate the next step to each other. We were excited to get the activity finished before the other team. We completed a course using controls which had to be visited in a particular order. We really enjoyed the taster session in Orienteering. Thank you Phillip and Aoife! The Senior Room were bursting with excitement as they headed on their school tour to Zipit Forest Adventures in Lough Key Forest Park Roscommon. The students were able to discover their wild side in the treetop high ropes park. The day was full of adventure as the circuit included zip lines, swinging logs, cargo nets and rope bridges. The students were challenged and motivated to reach beyond their perceived limitations. On the way home the students stopped in Supermacs Carrick on Shannon where they had some food and icecream before making their way back to school. It was a fantastic experience and the students had lots of fun making memories and working as a team with their class. Check out the photographs from the day below.

School Fun Day

The weather couldn't have been more perfect on Wednesday for our "Fun Day." We enjoyed a day packed with fun and activities in our own school yard. The day began with craft activities to keep us busy. Then Jess from "Mud Bugs" brought us on a Scavenger Hunt to collect lots of colours in our grass area. We leaves and flowers in to make crowns to wear. Next things got messy when we started working with clay. We used lots of materials from the natural environment to create lots of interesting things. After a quick wash up we got down to designing maps for a treasure hunt. We were not allowed to use colours so it was a challenge to find things around us to add colour to our maps. By now we were ready for a picnic lunch with our friends. It was so yummy and the ice-cream went down a treat. Check out the slideshows below to see the  fun we had with all our friends!
